The year was 1978 when Steve Mccurry had traveled to Pakistan. As a  Youth freelance photo journalist's in those days they were looking for stories.

This is the place where they met many Afghan refugees. Steve was inspired by those to Afghanistan. At that time, pro-Mujahideen rebels in Afghanistan, the U.S. and the Soviet Union had supported the government in conflict.

Steve took the picture of the orphan girl the name was Sharbat Gula in a refugee camp in Pakistan. The picture of Sharbat Gula green eyes became the face of the  country war-ravaged.  In the history National Geographic Magazine of this picture gained considerable prominence.

Born in Philadelphia, Steve visited many regions battling international conflicts and civil wars. Iran and Iraq war, the disintegration of the former Yugoslavia, Beirut, Cambodia, the Philippines, the Gulf War and the Afghanistan reporting of such events.
